Deficiencies in young horses can cause stiffness, listlessness, lung edema and an increase in heart rate, respiration rate and salivation. In adults it also causes stiffness as well as a decreased immune response and lowered fertility. 1-2 mg of selenium per 1100 lb horse per day in low selenium regions is recommended. The addition of this supplement to feed containing higher levels of selenium is not permitted.
